In the current market it is more important than ever to make the right impression at interview.

This information is designed to ensure that you are adequately prepared for your interview also to guarantee you will place yourself in the best position to get an offer on the table. 

Remember, there are two main reasons why people don’t get offers from interviews?

 1)     The interviewer believes that your skills / experience are not suited to the job or that there are people on the market that can do it better.

Make sure you highlight the relevant experience that you have that is most suited to the role - think about the company and the projects they undertake while preparing for the interview. 

 2)     The interviewer doesn’t think that you have prepared for the interview or you haven’t appeared to be interested in the company / position.

This is what you have most control over and where you will be given the opportunity to outshine the competition! Good preparation will ensure that you are confident going into the interview and that you are interested in the opportunity.

When preparing there are 5 basic questions that you should base your research around:

  • What do you know about the employer?
  • Why do you want to work for the employer?
  • What do you know about the position?
  • What attracts you to the role?
  • Why are you right for the role?
  • What makes you the best person for the job?

The internet is a great place to start but don’t just look at their website - look for other articles on the internet or ask friends or colleagues if they have an insight - If you do the minimum will you stand out from the other candidates they see?

Think about yourself!

It may seem obvious but dress appropriately (ask your consultant what is best), don’t swear and turn up on time!

Familiarize yourself with your CV before the interview - be sure of the places you have worked, what position you held and what the dates were.

Duties: Think about what your day to day duties are. It is important that you can break down what it is you do and how you add value to your current employer. If you can’t answer this effectively it will look like you don’t know your own job.

Projects: Think about what projects you’ve worked on - what are the most relevant to this position? Which one was the largest?  Which one was the most complex? Which one did you have most responsibility on? Which one are you most proud of and why?

Any Questions?

Have a couple of questions prepared to ask at the end of the interview. If you feel confident enough ask how the interview went and if they have any reservations about you. This gives you a chance to get feedback and deal with any possible reservations.

Ask for the job! Tell them that you want the job, and that you can really see yourself working with them.
