FUNDING for the dualling of the A46 has been agreed today as part of a £1.2bn package of transport improvements for the East Midlands

Members of the East Midlands Regional Assembly approved the £174m funding at a meeting in Melton Mowbray this morning.

Other schemes in Notts that were approved include:

  • A453 widening scheme - £156.4m

  • Nottingham to Lincoln rail speed improvements - £51m

  • Nottingham Ring Road improvements - £44.3m

  • Hucknall town centre improvements - £10.3m

  • Mansfield transport interchange - £7.6m

The decisions made today will be sent to the regional minister Phil Hope MP and the Government will formally respond later this year.

The £174m allocated for the A46 is half of the total cost of the project to widen the road between Newark and Widmerpool.

The Government has already earmarked its share of the funding.

The Campaign for the Protection of Rural England (CPRE) claim the money would be better spent on providing thousands of affordable homes or on major rail improvements.

At today's meeting the assembly also agreed a package of investment in affordable housing, regeneration, economic development and skills.

EMRA chairman Coun David Parsons said: "Schemes like the A46 improvement, which will be completed by 2011, thanks to an extra £174m from the Government, will help the region to fight back against the economic downturn.

Tim Hallam, Construction Manager at Linsco Recruitment says that this is a great boost for our placements with our regular clients in the East Midlands area.

We have listed more civil engineering  vacancies this week, and we suggest you get in there first.
